Description
The Anker Soundcore Liberty 4 NC are feature-rich, mid-range wireless earbuds that excel in active noise cancellation (ANC), sound quality, and battery life, offering a high-value alternative to more expensive brands. They are designed for users who want premium features, especially effective noise cancellation, without the premium price tag.
Design and comfort
- Case: The Liberty 4 NC’s case has a sleek, rounded, matte finish that feels substantial in hand. A button on the front of the case allows for a satisfying, spring-loaded flip-top opening. The case also features internal LED lighting when opened, giving it a futuristic and premium feel. It supports Qi wireless charging in addition to a standard USB-C port.
- Earbuds: The earbuds have a comfortable and lightweight stem-based design, similar to Apple’s AirPods Pro. They come with four sizes of silicone ear tips (XS, S, M, L) to ensure a secure and comfortable fit that creates an effective seal.
- Water resistance: With an IPX4 water-resistance rating, the earbuds are protected from sweat and light rain, making them suitable for workouts and commuting. The case, however, is not water-resistant.
Active noise cancellation (ANC)
- Class-leading performance for the price: The Liberty 4 NC’s ANC is considered exceptional for its price range, rivaling or outperforming earbuds that cost significantly more. It effectively eliminates low-frequency noise from airplane engines, trains, and cars.
- Adaptive ANC 2.0: The system uses sensors to analyze your ear canals and ambient environment in real-time to create a custom noise-canceling profile on the fly. This offers more dynamic and effective noise reduction than simple on/off ANC.
- App customization: The Soundcore app allows users to choose between Adaptive ANC, a manual mode with five intensity levels, or special “Transportation” modes optimized for planes, trains, and buses. You can also enable a wind-noise reduction feature.
Audio quality
- Hi-Res audio with LDAC: The earbuds feature custom-tuned 11mm dynamic drivers that support the high-resolution LDAC codec, enabling a higher data transfer rate for richer, more detailed sound on compatible Android devices.
- Energetic sound profile: By default, the Liberty 4 NC offers a lively and powerful sound profile with an emphasis on strong bass and bright highs. This makes them particularly well-suited for pop, hip-hop, and electronic music genres.
- Extensive EQ customization: The Soundcore app is one of the earbuds’ biggest strengths, offering a wealth of customization options. Users can choose from 22 presets, create their own custom sound profile with an 8-band graphic equalizer, or use the HearID feature, which performs a hearing test to generate a personalized sound signature.
Connectivity and calls
- Bluetooth 5.3: The earbuds are equipped with Bluetooth 5.3 for a stable and efficient wireless connection.
- Multipoint connectivity: They support a multipoint connection, allowing you to seamlessly switch between two paired devices, such as a phone and a laptop. However, using the higher-quality LDAC codec disables multipoint pairing.
- Google Fast Pair: For Android users, Google Fast Pair enables a quick and effortless initial setup.
- Call quality: With six beamforming microphones and an AI algorithm, the Liberty 4 NC provides clear voice pickup during calls by isolating your voice and reducing background noise.
Battery life
- Long-lasting power: Anker claims up to 10 hours of playtime on a single charge with ANC off, with the charging case providing an additional 40 hours.
- Real-world performance: With ANC enabled, playtime is closer to 8 hours per charge, still an impressive figure that beats many competitors.
- Quick charging: A quick 10-minute charge can provide up to 4 hours of playback.
Minor compromises
While the Liberty 4 NC offers a fantastic overall package, it’s not without its small compromises, particularly when compared to ultra-premium models:
- Less refined controls: The touch controls can sometimes be less accurate than the physical buttons or squeeze controls found on more expensive earbuds.
- Less advanced transparency: The transparency mode is serviceable but does not match the seamless, natural sound of high-end offerings like Apple’s Adaptive Transparency mode.
- Sound leakage compensation: Some users report that the sound leakage compensation and 3D surround sound features don’t offer significant audio enhancement.
